University of Minnesota Law School Archives

Riesenfeld Rare Books Research Center

The University of Minnesota Law School Archives is located in the Riesenfeld Rare Books Research Center. The Archives includes books and articles published by Law School faculty, some papers related to faculty and noted alumni, publications of the Law School and its centers and institutes, recordings of Law School lectures and events, and Law School photographs prior to 2003. In addition, the Archives hosts the American Law Institute (ALI) archival collection. Please see our user guide and finding aid to the collection for more information.

The University of Minnesota Archives, located in Elmer L. Andersen Library, similarly includes significant collections related to the history of the Law School. In particular, the University of Minnesota Archives holds Law School papers from 1889 to 1980, including the papers of Dean Everett Fraser, Dean William B. Lockhart, Dean Carl A. Auerbach, and Dean Robert A. Stein. Please consult the University of Minnesota Archives web page for detailed information on these and other collections related to the Law School.

Researchers interested in student photographs may wish to consult the Gopher, the yearbook of the University of Minnesota, published from 1886 to 1965. The Gopher is held at Wilson Library and the University of Minnesota Archives. Class photographs are held in Law School Archives in the Riesenfeld Center. Please note that class photographs have not been taken every year.

Please contact Ryan Greenwood (rgreenwo@umn.edu; 612-625-7323), Curator of Rare Books and Special Collections, with questions regarding the Law School Archives.
